Marking NATO's 75th anniversary, this DW documentary tracks the alliance from its 1949 founding, born out of the devastation of the Second World War and a desire to deter outside enemies while also keeping peace among members, particularly by keeping a defeated Germany contained. The film travels to Tallinn, Estonia to visit NATO's Cyber Defence Centre, to Ulm, Germany where troop and supply deployments are coordinated, and to NATO headquarters in Brussels where political decisions are hashed out. Interviews include serving and former NATO generals, security experts, historians, John Bolton, and diplomat Wolfgang Ischinger, who weigh in on how binding Article 5's collective defense pledge really is given that unanimity among member states is required, not guaranteed. Previously unseen archival material includes 1950s NATO-produced country portraits meant to build cohesion among soldiers from different nations. The film also examines how close the United States came to withdrawing from the alliance, and what speed and readiness failures could mean in an actual crisis.
