Germany's surrender in 1945 did not end the killing. Nazi loyalists formed underground cells to murder Germans who cooperated with the occupying Allies, and the SS-linked Werewolf organization spread word of a coming revival of the Party. This film interviews a former Werewolf who explains his motivation and what his role in the guerrilla campaign actually involved, then travels to the towns where the violence played out: Aachen, where Werewolves assassinated the pro-Allied mayor, and Penzberg, where a mob killed more than a dozen civilians in what came to be called the Night of Murder. It also tracks the Allied response, the denazification tribunals meant to purge former Nazis from public life, and shows how unpopular those trials became as bombings targeted the process itself. The film treats the immediate postwar period not as a clean transition to peace but as its own low-grade war, fought house to house in towns the Allies had just occupied.
