Nests of Gold

19 MIN · EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

In the Philippines, men climb sheer rock faces and descend into dark caves to harvest swiftlet nests, prized as one of the most expensive foods on earth and rumored to hold the secret to a long life. The film follows harvesters, both young and old, as they work without safety gear high above the ground, chipping nests loose from cave ceilings for buyers who prize the delicacy in soups and tonics said to boost health and longevity. It traces the trade from the cliffside to the kitchen, showing how a folk belief in bird's nest as medicine has turned a dangerous climb into a livelihood passed between generations. The camera stays close to the physical risk of the work, the narrow ledges, the makeshift ladders, the drop below, while also looking at what the nests are worth once they reach market and why buyers keep paying for them. It is a short, plain look at an unusual economy built on something birds make out of their own saliva.
