Silke Schulze is 40 and dying without a new heart and lungs. The film follows her wait in a Berlin hospital, where every ring of the phone could mean a matching donor has been found or another delay in a countdown she cannot control. Heart surgeon Adam Penkalla is the other half of the story: when an organ becomes available abroad, he boards a charter plane, removes it under time pressure, and races it back to Berlin before it degrades. Cameras follow him through the retrieval process and back into the operating theater, where Schulze's transplant becomes a 14-hour surgery. The footage moves between her hospital room, where waiting itself is the ordeal, and the clinical urgency of the procurement flights and operating room, showing how thin the margin is between a successful transplant and a fatal delay.
