Nigerian Teenagers Are Making Slick Sci-Fi Films With Their Smartphones

A group of teenagers in Nigeria are turning smartphones into film studios, shooting science fiction shorts with the kind of visual effects usually associated with big-budget productions. The film follows these young creators as they script, shoot, and edit their work using consumer apps and whatever equipment they can scrape together, compensating for the absence of professional cameras and crews with ingenuity and hours of trial and error. Interviews with the teenagers themselves explain how they taught themselves visual effects from online tutorials and shared their finished shorts on social media, building audiences far beyond their neighborhoods. The film treats their work as part of a broader wave of grassroots filmmaking coming out of Nigeria, where formal film school and studio backing remain out of reach for most young people. It is a short, plainly shot look at what ambition and a phone camera can produce when opportunity is scarce, and at the community of young Nigerian filmmakers pushing the format forward on their own terms.
