Nohelia

2011 · EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

Nohelia runs a school in a small village deep in the Colombian rainforest, a region where drug traffickers, guerrilla fighters, and corrupt local politics shape daily life more than any government program does. The film follows her through classrooms and hallways as she teaches children Afro-Colombian history and culture, treating the school itself as a kind of resistance: a space where kids learn something other than fear. Poverty is everywhere in the frame, in worn uniforms, patched roofs, and parents who cannot always spare their children for a full school day. Nohelia's own routine, arriving early, checking on absent students, pushing lessons on identity and heritage, becomes the film's real argument about what keeps a community intact when the state has mostly withdrawn. There is no reenactment or dramatic score, just observational footage of one woman's daily insistence that education still matters in a place where armed groups often decide who gets to speak and who does not. It is a small, specific portrait rather than a survey of Colombia's conflict.
