Grilled, boiled, or fried, octopus has become a delicacy in high enough demand to push stocks toward collapse across the Mediterranean. This DW film follows a crew along the coasts of Europe and Africa tracking what that demand costs. In Greece, a fisherman shows the camera his shrinking catch while Sea Shepherd works with the coast guard to pull thousands of illegal plastic traps off the seabed. In Galicia, northwestern Spain, factories cut, freeze, and export octopus for the international market, increasingly relying on imports from African waters as local regulations tighten. A corporation's plan to farm octopus in aquaculture draws fierce opposition from environmentalists, who argue the animals are too intelligent and stress-sensitive for captivity and that no humane slaughter method exists; the project is currently on hold. The film also traces an unexpected ripple effect: with fewer octopuses to eat them, invasive blue crabs are multiplying unchecked in Italy's Po Delta, wrecking mussel farms there. It's a portrait of one appetite reshaping several ecosystems at once.
