Off to Scotland: Happiness, Solitude and Oysters
Lars left a police career in Germany to move with his wife Sandy and their young son to Colonsay, a Scottish island with 120 residents, one shop and one café. Sandy grew up there and the couple married on the island years before relocating for good. Lars's father-in-law runs an oyster farm on Colonsay and is looking to hand the business over, so Lars steps in to learn the trade while Sandy resumes remote work from home. The film follows the family through the seasons: summer feels like a holiday, but winter brings only a few hours of daylight, battering storms, and what islanders call 'the demons.' Lars, outgoing and restless, copes by spending time with his son and swimming in the cold, rough seas around the island, confronting both the isolation and his own past. DW's camera stays close to daily routines on the oyster beds and in the house, building a quiet portrait of a family testing whether solitude can become home.
