Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus, and Michelle Knight vanish separately in Cleveland, Ohio, over roughly a decade, each disappearance treated at the time as a runaway case rather than an abduction. Ariel Castro, a school bus driver known to neighbors and even to some of the victims' families, holds the three women captive inside his house for eleven years before Berry breaks through a screen door in 2013 and flags down help. The film reconstructs how the kidnappings happened and, more pointedly, how they stayed hidden on an ordinary residential street, drawing on interviews with people who knew Castro personally rather than official investigators. It traces the daily mechanics of the captivity as far as the sources allow and follows the case through to Castro's arrest and the women's release. The focus stays on the neighborhood's blindness as much as the crime itself: friends, relatives, and acquaintances who saw Castro regularly and never suspected what the house contained.
