Junho Peter Whang, speaking in the joint IAS/Princeton University Groups and Dynamics Seminar, presents solutions to two open problems on indefinite integral ternary quadratic forms. The first, raised by Margulis in 1990, concerns the distribution of the ternary Markoff spectrum tied to minima of such forms. The second, initiated by Serre in 1990, asks for the asymptotic growth in the number of isotropic forms of bounded height. Whang describes a new tool built to handle high ramification issues that block direct approaches, and notes it applies to other distribution problems beyond this pair. The talk is joint work with Alexander Gamburd, Amit Ghosh, and Peter Sarnak, and runs at research seminar level, aimed at an audience already fluent in quadratic forms, arithmetic groups, and homogeneous dynamics rather than newcomers to the subject.
