On the Steps of Moab: Deuteronomy
Christine Hayes, professor of religious studies at Yale, examines the Book of Deuteronomy in this lecture from her Introduction to the Old Testament course. She opens with Moses's final address to the Israelites and the transfer of leadership to Joshua, presenting Moses as the paradigmatic biblical leader. Hayes then outlines the structure of Deuteronomy and walks through specific laws it updates and revises, using them as evidence of ongoing reinterpretation of earlier legal tradition within the Hebrew Bible itself. The lecture closes with the book's major themes: Israel as God's chosen people, Jerusalem as the chosen city, social justice obligations, covenantal love, and the push to centralize worship at a single sanctuary. Recorded for Yale's Open Yale Courses in Fall 2006, the lecture is organized into four chapters covering leadership, structure, legal revision, and theology.
