In Berlin's Marzahn-Hellersdorf district, one in four children grows up poor, and this film follows families trying to break out of it. Pierre Hollberg feeds six people on a budget of ten euros a day, sharing a 90 square meter apartment with his disabled wife and four children, no room left for a dining table. His mother-in-law Evi visits a food bank every two weeks to stretch what the family has. Jessica, a single mother of three with two vocational qualifications, recently traded unemployment benefits for a full-time job that pays less, because she wants to model working life for her kids. The charity Die Arche, running for thirty years on donations alone, gives local children a place to go; Pascal 'Kalle' Höhn, once one of those kids, spent two and a half years in juvenile detention and now trains as a welfare assistant there, working to keep others off the path he took. The film moves between these households and the Ark's rooms, letting the numbers on grocery budgets and rent do the arguing.
