One Plastic Beach

2012 · EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

Richard Lang and Judith Selby Lang have spent over a decade walking the same stretch of Northern California coastline, Kehoe Beach, picking up every piece of plastic the tide leaves behind. The film follows the couple sorting bottle caps, toothbrushes, and fragments of toys by color and shape into cabinets in their studio, then turning that debris into sculptures, prints, jewelry, and gallery installations. Interviews with the pair explain how a beach walk became an art practice and, eventually, an argument about ocean pollution made out of the pollution itself. The camera lingers on the raw material as they find it, half-buried in sand and tangled in kelp, before showing the same objects reassembled into deliberate patterns on gallery walls. It is a quiet film about repetition, the two of them returning to the same shoreline year after year, and about what a decade of collecting reveals: how much plastic keeps arriving no matter how much they remove.
