Original Wing Chun
Wing Chun traces its own origin story back to Yim Wing Chun, a young woman who, according to legend, studied under the Buddhist nun Ng Mui after the destruction of the Southern Shaolin temples and used her new style to refuse a forced marriage to a local warlord. The film follows that oral tradition forward through the historical record, from the era of master Leung Jan to the branches of the art that split off after him, and includes old footage of Yip Man and a young Bruce Lee training. Interviews and archival material sit alongside the legend rather than replacing it, since so much of Wing Chun's early history survives only as stories passed master to student rather than written record. The film treats that gap honestly, showing where documentation and family lore diverge, and lets practitioners demonstrate the close-range techniques that define the style. It works as both a history of one martial art and a case study in how oral traditions preserve, and distort, the past.
