This nature film tracks life at the extremes of dry and open land, moving from the Atacama Desert, one of the driest places on Earth, to the grass seas of North America. In the Atacama, Socotra cormorants crowd rocky refuges where fresh water is scarce, while high in Oman's Dhofar Mountains the camera catches Arabian leopards during their brief mating window, a rare sighting for such an elusive cat. The film follows desert elephants crossing cracked, waterless terrain in search of hidden waterholes, and shifts to grasslands where bison herds shape the ecosystem around them and swarms of caterpillars strip vegetation in sudden, dramatic pulses. Camera crews work in extreme heat and open plains to capture behavior that depends entirely on timing: a leopard's short mating season, an elephant's memory of a water source, a caterpillar bloom that comes and goes in weeks. Climate change runs underneath as a quiet pressure, narrowing the margins these species already work within.
