Drought is choking one of the world's busiest shipping routes. The Panama Canal moves roughly 30 to 40 ships a day and one-and-a-half million tons of cargo, but falling water levels have left ships waiting weeks for passage, with over 163 vessels anchored during the 2023 crisis. The film follows canal authorities pumping freshwater reserves into the locks even as ordinary Panamanians depend on that same water to drink, and tracks the auctions where shipping companies pay up to 2.5 million dollars, forty times the standard rate, for an emergency slot. Interviews with officials, engineers, and residents lay out a system caught between global trade demands and a shrinking domestic water supply, while cargo companies increasingly reroute around Panama entirely. The documentary also turns to the canal's other traffic: the roughly half a million migrants who crossed the surrounding route toward North America in 2023 alone, risking the jungle and waterways in pursuit of passage north. Two crises, one waterway, and no easy fix for either.
