Papua New Guinea – Rambo Nation

177

Papua New Guinea is a land of extraordinary natural beauty and diverse indigenous cultures. However, it is also home to an alarming level of tribal violence, exacerbated by the proliferation of modern weapons and drugs. In this remote corner of the world, ancient practices of tribal fighting have been replaced by more lethal and destructive means. While the traditional fighting had strict rules and limited casualties, the advent of guns has led to more rampant and devastating attacks, often resulting in the loss of innocent lives.

The absence of a functioning authority in the highlands and rampant corruption have also contributed to the escalation of violence in the country. The government has acknowledged the urgent need to establish authority and curb the excesses of the warriors who believe they can do whatever they want. However, the road to achieving this is long and difficult, and the country risks becoming a failed state if the situation continues to deteriorate.

Despite the seriousness of the situation, the world has largely ignored the plight of Papua New Guinea. The country is not only grappling with tribal violence but also facing a host of other problems such as poverty, lack of infrastructure, and climate change. It is high time that the international community took notice of the challenges faced by Papua New Guinea and extended a helping hand to the people in their hour of need.
