People of the Coral Triangle

2013 · EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

The Bajau, sea-dwelling people scattered across the reefs and islands of the Coral Triangle in Southeast Asia, describe an ocean that is alive, watchful, and populated by spirits alongside fish and coral. The film follows their daily rhythms of fishing and boat life while unpacking a belief system that blends Islam with older animist traditions, one where taboos and rituals govern how and when the sea can be used. Elders and fishermen speak about spirits tied to specific reefs and currents, and about the obligations those spirits impose on anyone who wants to keep taking a living from the water. The camera stays close to the water itself, following stilt houses, boats, and dive spots that make up the physical world this cosmology describes. Rather than treating animism as a relic, the film presents it as a working framework the Bajau still use to explain reef health, weather, and luck at sea, set against a marine environment increasingly strained by outside pressures.
