Peruvian Prison Aerobics

2013 · EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

Inside one of Peru's most notorious prisons, inmate Alejandro Nuñez del Arco, serving time for kidnapping, leads more than a thousand fellow prisoners through a mass aerobics routine he calls "Full Body." The film follows him as he choreographs and drills the exercise in the packed courtyard, turning a yard full of convicted men into a synchronized crowd moving to music. Cameras catch the scale of the operation: guards watching from the walls, inmates in matching movements, and Nuñez del Arco directing from a small platform like a fitness instructor rather than a prisoner. The routine becomes a rare structure in an otherwise chaotic environment, and the film treats it as both spectacle and coping mechanism, letting the images of a thousand bodies moving in unison speak for themselves. There is little narration beyond what is needed to place the viewer inside the prison and explain who Nuñez del Arco is. What remains is a strange, disciplined ritual born out of confinement.
