South-East Asia's shipping lanes carry a huge share of global trade, and this film tracks the two waterways where that traffic turns dangerous: the Malacca Strait and the Sulu and Celebes Sea off the southern Philippines. In Mindanao, it reconstructs the kidnapping and killing of German sailor Jürgen Kantner by Abu Sayyaf, the Al-Qaeda and ISIS-linked group that has built a business out of ransom kidnappings, piracy, and gun trafficking, and follows the counterterrorism units trying to break their networks. Further south, the film shifts to the Malacca and Singapore Straits, where organized crime syndicates use the narrow shipping lanes to hijack vessels, and traces how industrialization and migration along the coasts feed recruits into these operations. Interviews with investigators, security officials, and people from the affected coastal communities sit alongside footage of naval patrols and shipping traffic. The film treats piracy here as a business with its own economics, driven as much by poverty and geography as by ideology.
