Prison Girls: Life Inside America's Toughest Women's Prison
Cameras follow inmates through the daily grind of a U.S. women's prison, starting with the disorientation of a first night in custody and moving through the months that follow. Across four episodes the series tracks women detoxing from addiction, navigating violence and hierarchy on the wings, and dealing with the fallout of relationships on the outside, from estranged children to partners who stop visiting. Staff and inmates speak directly to camera about what put them there and what they think it will take to get out, and the series does not shy away from setbacks: relapses, disciplinary write-ups, and the grind of parole boards. Some women describe finding structure or purpose inside that they never had before prison, while others are simply counting days. The observational footage, shot inside an actual facility rather than reenacted, is the series' strongest asset, giving a plain, unglamorous look at incarceration instead of a tabloid version of it.
