Prostitutes of God

In parts of southern India, the Devadasi tradition still marks girls as young as ten for a lifetime of temple-sanctioned sex work, framed by families and communities as religious duty rather than exploitation. Journalist Sarah Harris travels through Karnataka's red-light districts and rural villages to talk with the women themselves, many of whom describe being dedicated to the goddess Yellamma by their own mothers, who were dedicated the same way before them. Interviews follow the cycle across generations: girls explaining what they were told about their futures, older women now working as brothel madams, and men who frame the practice as tradition even as they profit from it. The film also sits with health workers confronting the district's high HIV rates and with the girls' own daughters, who face the same expectations. Harris asks directly whether anyone believes this is really about faith. The answers she gets, hedged and uneasy, are the film's real subject.
