In “Puntland – In Search Of Black Gold,” we follow the journey of a region in Somalia that is on a quest for prosperity through oil drilling. Puntland has been a semi-autonomous region since 1998, formed in response to the ongoing civil war in the south. The region has been relatively calm recently, but illegal fishing, dumping, and piracy along its coast have prevented progress. However, for the first time in 20 years, oil companies are drilling in Puntland, and the region hopes that natural resources can transform its struggling economy. Oil could provide the jobs and revenue that Puntland desperately needs.
We talk to one of the men who is drilling for black gold and explore the potential impact of oil drilling on the region. Puntland is not alone in its quest for transformation through natural resources. We also take a look at Kabul’s real estate market, which experienced high property prices due to increased demand resulting from foreign investment. With the scaling down of commitments in Afghanistan, we explore the fate of the property bubble.
We also visit the Dharavi slum of Mumbai, India, the largest slum in Asia and a site of enormous industry and commerce. The Indian government has plans to turn the slum into a multi-billion dollar township, raising concerns about the impact on the existing community. We also explore the London high street store where you can walk in and buy a private jet, a luxury item that may seem out of reach for most.
Throughout the documentary, we get expert insights from Andrew Burns of the World Bank about the latest growth forecasts. Join us on this exploration of the challenges and opportunities faced by communities around the world as they seek to achieve prosperity and transform their economies.
