Purunga: The Man of the Cliffs

EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

On the arid cliffs above the Pacific Ocean near Huarmey, Peru, a man named Purunga makes his living on rock faces most people would never approach. The film follows him at work on those cliffs, where a single misstep means a fall into the churning water below, and lets his daily routine speak for itself rather than dramatizing it with narration. It is a portrait of one person and one place: the wind, the height, the risk taken for granted because it is simply the job. Purunga is presented as one of a small number of people who do this kind of work in the region, and the film stays close to him rather than widening into a broader survey. Short and specific, it is less an argument than a record of a way of life that depends entirely on nerve and balance, several hundred feet above the sea.
