Raphael Sanzio rises from provincial obscurity to become one of the most sought-after painters of the Italian Renaissance, and this BBC dramatization follows him through the courts and workshops of Florence and Rome, reenacting the rivalries and patronage battles that shaped his career alongside his art. The film leans into his reputation as the period's most flamboyant painter, staging scenes of ambition, romance, and competition with contemporaries like Michelangelo rather than sticking to a straight lecture format. Actors carry much of the story, with dramatized sequences standing in for the documentary record that simply does not survive for most of Raphael's life. It traces his rise under papal patronage in Rome up to his early death, presenting his career as a rapid, almost meteoric arc rather than a slow climb. The approach favors reenactment over analysis, aiming to put a face and a temperament on an artist usually known only through his finished canvases.
