Reborn Baby dolls are silicone or vinyl replicas of newborns painted with veins, birthmarks, and lifelike skin tones, detailed enough that they are sometimes mistaken for real infants. VICE surveys a global scene of roughly 20,000 doll makers and collectors, most dolls selling for $250 to $800 depending on the level of detail, though one piece by artist Romie Strydom fetched 22,000 euros, about $30,000. The film sits down with the people who make and keep them: an artist named Linda, who treats painting each doll as a creative outlet, and Marie, who calls the hours spent detailing a doll a form of therapy for her anxiety. On the collecting side, a woman named Jenny describes her dolls as substitutes for children, sources of comfort she says she loves as if they were real. Interviews move between studio worktables and collectors' homes, laying out the range of reasons people are drawn in, from grief over lost or unborn children to simple hobbyist pride, without settling on a single explanation for the pull these dolls have.
