In Karenni, the smallest of Myanmar's ethnic borderland states, civilians with no military background leave homes, jobs, and city life behind to train as insurgent fighters in secret jungle and mountain camps. This installment of the Red Zones series follows recruits of the Karenni Nationalities Defence Force as they learn irregular warfare tactics, from ambush drills to weapons handling, and prepare to face a much larger, better-equipped Myanmar military that has ruled through fear for decades. The film tracks the smuggling networks insurgents depend on to move medicine and weapons past military checkpoints into their control zones, often on foot or by motorbike along back roads to avoid capture. Fighters and commanders describe why they abandoned civilian life, and the film shows the makeshift hospitals treating casualties from a war fought with improvised weaponry against an entrenched army. The KNDF's discipline and battlefield gains are presented as a rare bright spot in a conflict most of the world has never heard of.
