Randall Wyn Fullmer spent twenty years as a Disney producer, working on films like "Chicken Little" and "The Emperor's New Groove," before walking away in 2007 to build electric bass guitars full time. Director Mike Enns follows what Fullmer himself calls his "Mad Plan," tracking the jump from a steady studio paycheck to a one-man workshop with no guarantee anyone will buy what he makes. The film catches the early rush of landing his first clients and the grind that follows, including stretches that push him toward burnout as orders, deadlines, and self-doubt pile up. Musicians who end up playing his instruments appear on camera, among them bassist Abraham Laboriel, James LoMenzo, and Fernando "Psycho" Vallin of Maná, giving some sense of whether the gamble paid off musically as well as financially. The film won the RBC Emerging Artist Award at the Niagara Integrated Film Festival in 2014. It stays close to Fullmer's workshop and his own account of the decision, rather than reaching for outside experts to judge it.
