Hundreds of cryptic tiles, pressed into asphalt from Philadelphia to South America, carry messages that reference the historian Arnold J. Toynbee and his theories about reviving dead civilizations by resurrecting the dead on Jupiter. Made of layered linoleum and asphalt patched over by night, the tiles have been surfacing since the early 1980s, and no one has ever claimed them. The film follows one obsessive researcher who spends years tracking the tiles' spread, comparing wording and construction techniques across cities, and chasing thin leads toward a possible author. His search pulls in other amateur investigators who trade photographs and theories online, turning the mystery into a shared, low-grade obsession. Interviews and street footage of the tiles themselves carry most of the film, with little narration standing between the viewer and the researcher's own notebooks and reasoning. The identity behind the tiles remains unconfirmed by the end, but the patient, almost archival way the investigation is assembled is the real subject: what it looks like to spend a decade on a puzzle that may never resolve.
