The world’s rhino population is in peril, with only 20,000 rhinos remaining in the wild and one rhino poached for its horn every 7.5 hours. This alarming trend inspired Dereck and Beverly Joubert to answer the call to save this iconic species. Partnering with the Great Plains Foundation and & Beyond, the couple has launched the Rhinos Without Borders program.
The program is making a significant impact on rhino conservation by relocating 100 rhinos from high-density poaching areas in South Africa to the safest regions in Botswana. The results are already paying off, with three calves born to relocated rhinos. The goal of Rhinos Without Borders is to find the right balance between conservation, community involvement, and commerce to create a sustainable future for the world’s wildlife.
Rhino conservation not only benefits the species itself but also has a ripple effect on the entire ecosystem. By protecting rhinos, the program hopes to create a thriving environment for all the animals around them, from the smallest insects to the largest mammals. This initiative is a shining example of the positive impact that can be made when individuals take action to make a difference.
