Engineers around the world are racing to put humanoid robots into ordinary homes, and this film follows the labs building them. Researchers demonstrate machines designed to walk, grip, and read facial expressions well enough to work alongside people, while developers explain the sensors and software that let a robot navigate a cluttered room without knocking things over. Interviews with roboticists and industry figures lay out the commercial pressure driving the field: whoever builds a machine reliable and cheap enough for the average living room stands to open an enormous market. The film also sits with the harder questions that come with that goal, asking what changes when machines start to look and move like us, from labor displacement to the psychological effect of living with something built to imitate a person. Demonstrations of prototypes in various stages of development give a concrete sense of how far the technology has come and how much further it has to go before it belongs in an ordinary house.
