Historian Alice Loxton follows Hadrian's Wall to piece together how Roman cavalry actually lived and fought on Britain's northern frontier. She walks the remains of Chester's Roman fort, tours Vindolanda's excavated fort and museum, and stops at Hexham Abbey, using each site's finds and structures to reconstruct the horsemen's equipment, quarters, and daily routine. Vindolanda's writing tablets and artifacts anchor much of the detail, giving a granular sense of supply lines, rank, and garrison life far from Rome. The film treats the wall not as a single monument but as a working military system, with cavalry units stationed to patrol, intercept, and project Roman power into hostile territory. Interviews with archaeologists and site curators fill in context Loxton's own narration doesn't cover, and the on-location photography makes the scale of the frontier fortifications legible in a way maps can't. It adds up to a grounded look at an occupying force's everyday logistics rather than a battles-and-emperors overview.
