Ruben's Elevator

2016 · EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

Ruben Pardo runs an elevator by hand, six days a week, in a Los Angeles building where automatic cars took over everywhere else decades ago. At seventy-five, he is described as the oldest manual elevator operator left in the city, and the film follows him through his shift, opening the brass gate, calling out floors, greeting tenants who have ridden with him for years. Forty years on the job have made the elevator car itself a kind of stage, and the film uses that confined space to let Pardo talk about the building's history and his own, without narration steering the conversation. It is a small, specific portrait rather than a survey of a dying profession, built on one man, one machine, and the routine that has held both in place while the rest of the industry moved on to push-button cars.
