Rick Simpson survived a head injury in 1997 that left him with chronic pain and ringing in his ears no prescription could touch. He turns to hemp oil, extracting a thick concentrate from cannabis plants grown on his own property in Nova Scotia, and the film follows his claim that the oil cleared skin cancer lesions from his own arm within days. Interviews with Simpson and people who say they used his oil for their own tumors make up the core of the film, alongside his account of police raids on his home and the RCMP destroying his plants. The film sets his story against the pharmaceutical industry's patents on synthetic cannabinoid drugs, arguing that a cheap plant-based remedy has no path to approval because no company can profit from it. It is a first-person case for hemp oil as cancer treatment, built entirely on testimony rather than clinical trials, and it treats that gap as itself part of the story.
