For decades, European governments built their energy security on Russian gas, and Germany did so more deeply than anyone. This film traces how the state-controlled monopoly Gazprom grew out of the wreckage of the Soviet Union, through a chaotic gas rush in the 1990s, into a political instrument once Vladimir Putin consolidated power, arresting oligarchs and expropriating rivals along the way. Shot before Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the footage and interviews offer access to Gazprom's inner workings that filmmakers say would be impossible to get now. The film lays out how pipeline deals, personal relationships between Russian officials and German politicians, and decades of cheap gas made Berlin slow to see energy dependence as a vulnerability. It asks why Western leaders kept expanding that dependence even as warning signs piled up, and it treats the war in Ukraine as the moment those warnings became impossible to ignore. The result is a portrait of how commercial convenience curdled into strategic exposure.
