In 1631, Magdeburg was one of the wealthiest cities in the Holy Roman Empire. Within months it was a burned-out ruin, and its destruction became the byword for atrocity in the Thirty Years' War. This film reconstructs the siege through firsthand accounts, following the imperial commander Count Tilly as his forces breach the walls and the massacre and fire that follow. It also tracks the wider chessboard behind the slaughter, including Cardinal Richelieu's cold calculation that a fractured Germany served French interests better than a united one, and the ordeal of an ordinary mercenary soldier caught inside the collapse. Interviews with historians sit alongside period illustrations, maps, and dramatized readings from contemporary diaries and letters to explain how a regional religious conflict between Catholic and Protestant princes hardened into a continental war that would redraw Europe's borders. The result is a grounded account of one city's destruction used to explain the logic of a war that killed millions.
