South Sudan became the world's newest nation in July 2011, splitting from Sudan after decades of civil war fought partly over oil. President Salva Kiir, from the majority Dinka, and his former vice president Riek Machar, from the Nuer, ran the new government together until December 2013, when Kiir accused Machar of plotting a coup. The accusation ignited a civil war along ethnic lines. Journalists Robert Young Pelton and Tim Freccia travel into the bush to find Machar, who is hiding in Akobo after his home was burned and his bodyguards killed. Their guide is Machot Lat Thiep, a former child soldier who once advised on South Sudan's constitution and now manages a Costco in Seattle; he works satellite phones and old rebel contacts to arrange the meeting. Machar grants the pair access to the front lines at Malakal, where the film documents the Nuer militia known as the White Army looting and killing. The footage is largely unfiltered, shot inside a conflict most outside reporting never reaches.
