A bronze statue of Alexander the Great, returned to Greece as looted art from a British dealer's collection, becomes the center of a forgery dispute. Archaeologist Stephan Lehmann, who has flagged around 50 suspected fakes over his career, argues the piece does not hold up to scrutiny, and the film follows his methods as he makes the case. It also tracks a separate test case: an anonymous Swiss collector who paid several hundred thousand dollars in New York for a bronze bust of Emperor Augustus, then sent it to Lehmann for examination. Lehmann has it CT-scanned at Germany's Fraunhofer Institute, using one of the most powerful scanners in the world, to read the metal itself for signs of modern manufacture. Interviews with dealers, collectors, and scientists lay out how convincingly forgers replicate ancient casting techniques and why museums and auction houses often resist admitting the problem. The film's real subject is the restitution system itself, and how a looted-art return can end up sending a fake object back to its supposed homeland.
