Scientology and Me

EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

Reporter John Sweeney spends months trying to get straight answers out of the Church of Scientology for BBC's Panorama, and the film that results is as much about the reporting process as the church itself. Sweeney interviews former members who describe harassment after leaving, while current members and church spokesman Tommy Davis shadow his every move, filming him filming them. The tension boils over in a hotel conference room where Davis confronts Sweeney over an earlier interview with a Scientologist who called the group a cult, and Sweeney, worn down by weeks of surveillance and interruption, shouts back on camera, a moment that became notorious in its own right and that the church later used against him. Trips to Los Angeles and Sussex show church minders blocking questions and trailing crew members. The film ends up as a document of what happens when an organization determined to control its narrative meets a reporter determined to get past the minders, with neither side coming away looking entirely comfortable.
