Giant new telescopes have pushed the observable universe further than ever, and this film follows astronomers using them to ask how far out space actually reaches. It moves outward in stages, from planets and stars in our own galaxy to distant galaxy clusters, explaining how instruments capture light that left its source billions of years ago, effectively looking backward in time. Researchers describe how redshift measurements let them calculate distances and speeds that are otherwise impossible to picture on a human scale. The film uses telescope imagery, animated diagrams, and interviews with scientists to explain concepts like the cosmic microwave background and the expansion of the universe, building toward the question of whether space has an actual physical edge or simply a limit to what our instruments can detect. It treats the difference between the observable universe and the universe as a whole carefully, without pretending the science has settled the matter. The result is a plain, image-driven survey of how astronomers currently measure the scale of everything.
