The modern state of Israel rests on a founding story: that Rome expelled the Jewish population from ancient Judea and scattered it across the world. This BBC film tests that story against the archaeological record, focusing on Sepphoris, a town roughly seventy miles from Jerusalem. Rather than ruins left by a fleeing population, excavations there show a Jewish community that kept building, trading, and living for centuries after the supposed exile. If Sepphoris never emptied out, the film asks, what actually happened to communities like it, and why did the exile narrative take hold so completely across religious and national history? The trail leads to a Palestinian village destroyed in 1948, where some residents may descend from Jews who were never forced out at all, just absorbed into the surrounding population over centuries of conquest and conversion. Historians and archaeologists lay out the evidence on camera, treating exile less as a single expulsion than as a story that hardened into fact long after the events it describes.
