Ralph Moss took a job as a science writer at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in the 1970s and ended up its most inconvenient employee. The film follows what he found in the lab of researcher Kanematsu Sugiura, whose animal studies on Laetrile, the apricot-pit compound promoted as an alternative cancer treatment, showed effects the institution's public statements flatly contradicted. Moss and his colleagues describe watching press releases dismiss Laetrile as worthless while internal data suggested otherwise, and the fallout that followed when he went public: firing, lawsuits, and a fight over who gets to control what a major research hospital tells the press. Interviews with Moss and others involved lay out the internal memos and meeting minutes at the center of the dispute, without pretending to settle whether Laetrile itself works. The real subject is institutional behavior under pressure, how an organization decides what its own scientists are allowed to say once a finding threatens the official line. It plays as a case study in scientific gatekeeping as much as a story about one drug.
