Millions of people spend their real lives logged into virtual ones, and this film follows a handful of them through World of Warcraft, EverQuest, and Second Life to see what that actually looks like. A couple builds a relationship entirely inside a game world, never having touched before the camera arrives. A disabled player finds a body that works the way he wants it to. Guild leaders manage hundreds of online subordinates like a second job, and Chinese gold-farming workers grind for virtual currency in warehouse-style shops, turning other people's leisure into their wage labor. The film also sits with players whose habits have curdled into addiction, tracking the real-world costs: dropped classes, lost jobs, relationships that exist only through a screen. No single verdict gets handed down.
