The Knights Templar built a reputation for secrecy that outlived the order itself, and this film uses historical re-enactments of their battles and rituals to test which parts of that reputation are fact. From there the film moves to the first century AD and the crowded field of preachers and wonder-workers active around the Mediterranean, focusing on Apollonius of Tyana, a healer credited with miracles and, by some followers, called the son of God, and asks why the cult of Jesus outlasted its rivals. A closing section turns to end-times prophecy, weighing the Book of Revelation's apocalyptic imagery against the argument that it describes an internal religious crisis rather than a literal countdown to disaster. Scholars appear throughout to sort tradition from documented history.
