North Korea remains one of the most closed societies on earth, and this film gets inside it through footage that was never meant to leave the country. Undercover journalists and a network of defectors and citizen reporters smuggle out video shot on hidden cameras, capturing market stalls, malnourished children, and the everyday improvisation people use to survive since the state rationing system collapsed. Interviews with defectors who fled across the Chinese border describe the informant networks, the punishments for unauthorized trade, and the calculations families make before risking an escape. The footage moves between Pyongyang's staged monuments and the provinces, where the gap between propaganda and daily life is stark. Analysts and journalists following North Korea from outside add context on Kim Jong Un's early rule and how information technology, smuggled phones, USB drives, foreign radio, is slowly cracking a decades-old information blockade. The film's real achievement is access: it shows a country that has spent generations preventing exactly this kind of documentation from getting out.
