Three elderly, retired apes look back on lives spent almost entirely among humans. One spent decades as a film performer, another was used in NASA's early space experiments, and the third was raised with language training, taught to communicate through signs and symbols. The film lets each animal's history unfold through archival footage from their working years alongside present-day observation of how they live now, aged and out of the spotlight. Caretakers and researchers who have known them for years describe what daily life with these apes reveals about memory, attachment, and how blurred the line gets between animal behavior and something closer to personality. Rather than treating the apes as case studies, the film treats them as individuals with distinct histories, giving weight to the strangeness of a life built for human purposes, entertainment, research, communication, and then quietly ended. The tone stays observational and unhurried, leaning on the footage itself rather than narration to make its case about what these animals understood, and what they were owed.
