Sex, Slavery, and Drugs in Bangladesh

26 MIN · EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

Bangladesh is one of the most densely populated countries on earth, and this film looks at what poverty and inequality push people into on its margins. Prostitution is legal there, a rare status in South Asia, and the film uses that legal foothold to get cameras into brothels and red-light districts where sex work, debt bondage, and drug use overlap. Interviews with women working in the trade and with people around them lay out how legality on paper does not prevent coercion in practice, and how young girls end up trafficked into brothel districts with little way out. The film treats the drug trade as part of the same economy, feeding and feeding off the same poverty. It stays close to the ground, in brothel corridors and back rooms rather than government offices, letting the people living this system describe it in their own words rather than through statistics alone.
