Almost 80,000 workers, most of them women, staff a single electronics factory in Vietnam, assembling components for the global supply chain under conditions few outsiders ever see. Filmmaker Parsifal Reparato could not film on location, so he has the women re-enact their daily routines in stripped-down, almost abstract sets: the repetitive assembly-line motions, the dormitory bunks, the security checks entering and leaving the factory floor. Close-ups of hands and faces alternate with first-person accounts describing surveillance, exhaustion, and long shifts for wages that barely cover rent and food. Several workers talk about what they gave up to take the job and what they still want, mostly more schooling and a way out of the assembly line into something resembling a career. The reenactment approach, staged rather than observational, turns the film into something closer to testimony than reportage, letting individual workers narrate a system that mass-produces the phones and electronics much of the world uses without seeing who assembles them.
