Shelter: A Look at Manchester's Homeless
Filmmaker Mike Staniforth walks the streets of Manchester to talk directly with people sleeping rough, at a time when UK homelessness figures were climbing. Rather than relying on statistics or charity spokespeople, the film lets the homeless men and women themselves describe how they ended up without a roof, what a night on the pavement actually involves, and what, if anything, the city and its services are doing for them. The camera stays close to doorways, shop fronts, and underpasses rather than cutting away to studio analysis, giving the film the feel of a direct record rather than a policy report. Staniforth's approach is plain and observational: point the camera, ask the question, let the answer run. The result is a short, unpolished portrait of a specific city at a specific moment, built almost entirely from the voices of the people it is about rather than from experts speaking on their behalf.
