NATO calls itself the world's most successful defense alliance, but that view does not hold in much of Africa and Asia. This DW Documentary film examines why countries like India and South Africa have refused to cut ties with Russia despite the invasion of Ukraine, and why many in the Global South view NATO with suspicion rather than trust. Interviews with decision makers and advisors in South Africa, India, the United States, and Europe lay out competing readings of the war: one side sees a clear violation of international law, the other sees decades of Western double standards and interventions that make NATO's current outrage ring hollow. The film traces this disconnect back through NATO's own history rather than dismissing it as Russian disinformation, and asks whether reconciliation between the alliance and its skeptics is possible as the world drifts toward multipolarity. It is a measured piece of geopolitical reporting built on direct testimony rather than commentary.
